Episode 34: Invisible Son by Kim Johnson
This is another heavy read this week! Not only do we have the story of abused adopted black children but it is all occurring in the middle of Covid lockdown and the Black Lives Matter explosion.
Andre Jackson is returning from juvie. His Portland, Oregon, neighborhood is rapidly gentrifying, and COVID-19 shuts down school before he can return. The one thing Andre is counting on is his relationship with the Whitaker kids—especially his longtime crush, Sierra. But Sierra’s brother Eric is missing, and the facts don’t add up.
Trigger warnings include:
- Racism (theme)
- Racial slurs recounted
- Suicide mentioned
- Alcohol consumption mentioned
- Smoking mentioned (cigarettes)
- False incarceration of a minor
- Police violence*
- Gentrification
- Child Abuse
- Murder
